Major Morris (1921-2016) held his first “major” photo exhibition in San Diego in 1997, in the new Earl & Birdie Taylor Library in Pacific Beach, which had opened earlier that year. That exhibition included 39 black and white photographs depicting inner-city life, primarily from the northeastern U.S.
Reflecting/Revisiting features pieces selected by Major Morris’s wife, Anne-Grethe, and represents a “homecoming” to Pacific Beach for his art.
This exhibition is divided into three groupings of his interests:
Children’s curiosity and yearning for exploration and learning,
Social injustice as documented at the 1968 Poor People’s March on Washington, and
Interactions with both well-known and aspiring jazz musicians playing at various establishments around Boston.
Viewers are urged to consider what has really changed during the 50-60 years since these photos were taken, and even in the 28 years since some of these images were last shown in Pacific Beach.
